What an Earl's Court locksmith is usually called out for
Most of SW5 is tall Victorian stucco and brick terraces that were built as single family houses and later divided into flats, bedsits and small hotels. One building on Nevern Square or Barkston Gardens can hold six or eight front doors behind one communal entrance. That layout shapes almost every call we get here.
The most common job is a flat door that has shut behind someone with the keys still inside. Flat doors in these conversions usually rely on a rim nightlatch, often an old non deadlocking Yale type, sometimes with a 5 lever mortice deadlock below it. If only the latch was engaged we can normally open it without damage. If the deadlock was locked, it takes longer, and we explain the options before touching anything.
The other regulars are keys snapped in stiff cylinders, landlords changing locks between tenants, communal doors that no longer close properly, and broken post box locks in the hallway. For a full list of residential work see our home locksmith services.
We usually reach Earl's Court in 20 to 40 minutes from our base in Chelsea SW3; the time and the price are confirmed on the phone before we set off.

How long does it take us to reach Earl's Court from Chelsea?
Usually 20 to 40 minutes, and we give you a realistic time when you call. From the King's Road end of Chelsea we head north through the Redcliffe and Old Brompton Road area, which brings us into SW5 from the south. Late at night it is quicker than that range suggests. At school run and evening rush times the one way system around Earl's Court Road and Warwick Road slows everything down.
Because of that one way system, it helps if you tell us the nearest cross street and which side of the road your door is on. On a big square like Earl's Court Square or Courtfield Gardens, the house number alone does not always tell a driver which arm of the square to aim for.
Communal front doors, closers and post boxes in converted buildings
The shared front door of a converted SW5 house takes a beating. It is opened dozens of times a day, it is often a heavy original timber door, and the closer at the top is usually years past its best. When the closer weakens, the door stops latching and the building is left open to anyone walking past.
We repair or replace door closers for £40 to £75 and replace hallway post box or letterbox locks for £25 to £45. Communal parts usually belong to the freeholder or a managing agent, so we need the agent, the freeholder or the residents' association to approve the work. Tell us who manages the building when you call and we will sort out who signs off. Larger blocks with a porter or a contract arrangement can see our mansion block locksmith service.
Securing a lower ground or garden flat in SW5
Many Earl's Court houses have a lower ground flat reached down steps from the pavement, with its front door tucked under the main entrance and a rear door onto a small garden. These doors are out of sight from the street, which is exactly why they need better locks than the upper flats.
For a timber front door we usually suggest a BS3621 mortice deadlock, fitted for £60 to £85, alongside a British Standard nightlatch at £50 to £75. Many insurers expect a BS3621 lock on the final exit door, so check your policy wording. Rear uPVC or composite garden doors often still have a basic euro cylinder, which we replace with a TS007 3 star or Sold Secure SS312 Diamond anti snap cylinder. Front facing basement windows can take sash window locks and restrictors.
Emergency locksmith in Earl's Court at night
We answer the phone 24 hours a day, including weekends and bank holidays, and the person who answers is the locksmith who comes out. Late night calls in SW5 are usually lockouts after a night out, keys lost on the Underground, or a door damaged in a break in that cannot be left open until morning.
Someone vulnerable inside?
If a child, a vulnerable person or a pet is locked inside, or a hob or bath is running, call 999 first. Then call us on 07520 643913.
After a break in we make the door secure the same night, either with a burglary repair and secure up for £75 to £175 or boarding up if the frame is too badly split. All our rates are set out on the locksmith price list.
Common questions
How fast can a locksmith get to Earl's Court?
Usually 20 to 40 minutes from our base in Chelsea SW3, sometimes less late at night when the roads are clear. We confirm the arrival time on the call, and if traffic around the Earl's Court one way system changes things we ring you.
Is there an extra charge to come to SW5 from Chelsea?
No. There is no call out fee and no travel surcharge for Earl's Court. A lockout is £45 to £75, with the higher end for nights, weekends and high security locks, and the exact figure is agreed before we leave.
I am staying in an Earl's Court short let and I am locked out. Can you let me in?
Yes, once we can confirm you are meant to be there. We ask the host or agent to confirm your booking by phone or message, and we check ID. This step stops strangers being let into someone else's flat.
Can you change the lock on my own flat door in a converted house?
Yes. Your flat entrance door is usually your responsibility or your landlord's, so we can change the nightlatch or cylinder on your say so if you own it. Tenants should get the landlord's agreement first. The communal front door needs the freeholder or managing agent.
Who pays to fix a broken communal door in an SW5 building?
Usually the freeholder or the managing agent, recovered through the service charge. We can quote the agent directly. A door closer is £40 to £75 and most other communal lock work is priced on the phone, see our door closer repair page.
Can you open a car parked on an Earl's Court street?
Yes. A car lockout costs £40 to £65. Call with the registration so we can confirm your make and model first, and have the V5C and ID ready. Some newer models need the dealer, and we will tell you honestly if yours does.
