Which part of Kensington do we mean?
People use Kensington for a wide area, so to be clear: this page is about W8, the streets north of Cromwell Road around the High Street, Kensington Church Street, Campden Hill and the Phillimore Estate. The museum quarter and Gloucester Road side is SW7, covered on our South Kensington locksmith page. North of Notting Hill Gate is W11, on our Notting Hill locksmith page.
Within W8 we regularly work on and around:
We usually reach Kensington W8 in 25 to 45 minutes from our base in Chelsea SW3; the time and price are confirmed on the phone before we set off.
Kensington mews houses: garage doors and narrow frontages
Behind many W8 streets runs a cobbled mews, originally stables and coach houses and now mostly homes. A mews house usually has a front door right on the cobbles, a garage door beside it, and windows at first floor level that face straight onto the neighbours opposite.
The garage door is often the weak point. Up and over doors with a small T handle lock and old side hung timber doors with a padlock hasp are both common. We replace or repair garage door locks for £40 to £65, and where the garage leads straight into the house we treat the internal door as a second front door, with a proper deadlock on it.
The front door itself is usually timber, sometimes a converted stable door. A British Standard nightlatch for £50 to £75 plus a BS3621 mortice deadlock is the standard upgrade, and it is what most home insurers expect to see.

Larger houses on the Phillimore Estate and Campden Hill
The houses around Phillimore Gardens and up the slope towards Campden Hill are some of the largest in the area we cover, many of them semi detached or detached villas with side passages, garden gates and several sets of doors onto the garden. Each of those is an entry point, and each tends to have a different age of lock.
For homes like these we look at the whole outside of the house, not just the front door: French and patio doors onto the garden, the side gate, basement doors under the front steps and any internal door from a garage. Rear French doors often need surface bolts or hinge bolts as well as a good lock. We write the make and model of every lock fitted on the invoice, which is useful for your insurer and for the next person who services them.
Some of these houses already have Banham locks fitted. We open, repair and replace them. Banham registered keys can only be cut by Banham, so if you have lost one, read our guide on what to do after losing a Banham key.
Terraces around Edwardes Square and Campden Hill Square
Between the big villas and the mews sit the Georgian and Victorian terraces, many arranged around garden squares such as Edwardes Square and Campden Hill Square, where residents share a private garden behind locked gates. The houses are often still single homes, sometimes split into two or three flats.
Three things come up again and again in these terraces. Front area steps lead down to a lower ground door that nobody sees from the street, and it is usually the oldest lock in the house. Ground floor sash windows facing the pavement have nothing but a brass catch, which we can supplement with sash locks and restrictors. And residents' garden gates wear out with weather and use; we repair or replace those locks only when the garden committee asks us to.
Shops and galleries on Kensington Church Street and the High Street
Kensington Church Street is known for its antique dealers and galleries, and the High Street is mostly shops and restaurants with flats above. Business calls here are usually a shop door lock that has jammed at closing time, keys that left with a member of staff, or a pair of double doors at the front that no longer line up and lock.
We change cylinders, repair double door locks and fit door closers, early or late so trading is not disturbed. Before working on business premises we confirm that the caller has authority for the shop. Larger jobs, such as several doors or a restricted key system, are priced on the phone first.
Getting from Chelsea up to Kensington
We head north from the King's Road through South Kensington, usually by Gloucester Road or the Earl's Court side depending on where you are in W8, and cross Cromwell Road into the High Street area. Arrival is usually 25 to 45 minutes, quicker in the small hours and slower in weekday traffic on the High Street.
For a mews address, tell us which street the mews opens off. Satellite navigation often struggles with mews entrances, and knowing the arch to look for saves time when you are waiting outside.
What we check before opening a door in W8
Our checks, every time
Before opening a home we check proof of residence, such as a bill, a bank letter or a tenancy agreement, which can be shown once the door is open if it is inside. For a car we need the V5C and ID. For a safe, proof that it is yours. The person who answers your call is the DBS checked locksmith who turns up, and you pay once the job is done and tested.
If you have locked your keys in a car on a Kensington street, call with the registration so we can confirm your make and model before we travel. A car lockout is £40 to £65. Some newer models and some smart keys can only be handled by the dealer, and we will tell you on the call if yours is one of them. For other neighbouring postcodes see all areas we cover.
Common questions
Do you cover W8 and the Holland Park side of Kensington?
Yes. We cover all of W8, including Campden Hill, the Phillimore Estate and the streets towards Holland Park. Arrival is usually 25 to 45 minutes from our base in Chelsea SW3.
Can you replace the lock on a Kensington mews garage door?
Yes. Garage door locks are £40 to £65 for up and over and side hung doors. If the garage opens into the house, we also recommend a deadlock on the internal door between them.
I have lost my car keys near Kensington High Street. Can you make a new one?
Often, yes. A new key when all keys are lost is £75 to £140, cut and programmed on site. Call with the registration so we can confirm your make and model, as some newer cars and smart keys need the dealer. See our car key replacement page.
How much is an emergency locksmith in Kensington?
A lockout is £45 to £75, with the higher end for nights, weekends and high security locks. There is no call out fee. The full list is on our locksmith prices page.
What locks should go on French doors at the back of a Kensington house?
Timber French doors need a lock that throws into both leaves plus surface bolts or flush bolts top and bottom, and hinge bolts help on outward opening doors. Our door bolts page explains the options.
Are you a Kensington based locksmith?
No, we are based in Chelsea SW3 and travel to Kensington. We say so because it affects arrival time: usually 25 to 45 minutes rather than the under 30 minutes we manage in Chelsea itself.
