Why the badge is not enough: model year decides the key

Two Range Rovers parked side by side on Cadogan Square can have completely different key systems. Manufacturers change the electronics between generations and sometimes in the middle of one, and the newest systems are often locked so that new keys can only be ordered and coded through the brand's own network.

That is why we ask for the registration before anything else. It tells us the exact model, the year and usually the key system, and lets us say on the phone whether the job is a roadside one, a dealer one, or something we need to look at in person. You do not pay for a wasted visit.

Have this ready when you call

  • The registration, and the model name if you know it.
  • How many working keys you still have: none, one, or one that is damaged.
  • Whether the car is locked, and where it is parked, including any car park barrier or concierge.
  • Where the V5C or lease agreement is, so the ownership check does not hold the job up.

Range Rover, BMW, Mercedes and Porsche keys: what to expect

The cards below are a general guide based on the makes we are asked about most in Chelsea. It is not a promise for any single car; the registration decides.

Range Rover and Land Rover

Very common on Chelsea streets and a frequent theft target. Many earlier and mid generation models can have spare and replacement keys coded at the roadside. Some of the most recent models use systems that are dealer only.

Check by registration; older models usually roadside.

BMW

Many BMWs from recent years can be given spare and replacement keys outside a dealer, though some need the car's modules handled with care. A few of the newest models are restricted.

Often possible at the car.

Mercedes

Older Mercedes keys are often possible. Many later Mercedes key systems are tightly controlled, and in practice new keys come through the dealer.

Older models possible; many newer ones dealer only.

Porsche

Depends heavily on the model and year. Some can be done outside the dealer, others cannot, and we will be clear which yours is.

Case by case, by registration.

Mini

Built on BMW group electronics, so keys are often handled in a similar way and are frequently possible at the roadside.

Usually possible at the car.

For the general process of making a key when none are left, see our car key replacement page.

Lost a Tesla key card? What a locksmith can and cannot do

Tesla works differently from every other make on this page. The car is normally opened with the owner's phone, with a credit card sized key card as the backup. New key cards are added through the car's own touchscreen, using a key that the car already trusts, such as your phone key or another card.

That means a traditional locksmith does not cut or code a Tesla key card. If you still have your phone key working, you can usually add a new card yourself from the car's locks menu. If you have lost every key and your phone access, Tesla's own service is the route. We would rather tell you that now than take your money for a call out we cannot complete.

If your Tesla's phone key fails and the card is inside the car, check the app is signed in and Bluetooth is on before calling anyone.

When the main dealer really is the better option

We are a mobile locksmith, not a franchise dealer, and some prestige cars are built so that only the dealer can register a new key. It is usually the newest models with the most advanced smart keys. In those cases the dealer will need the car, your V5C and ID, and the key will often be ordered from the manufacturer.

What we can still do in many of those cases is open the car without damage if the key is locked inside, which is our standard car lockout service, and repair a damaged door barrel after an attempted theft. Ask us on the call.

Protecting a keyless premium car parked on a Chelsea street

High value cars with keyless entry are targeted across London, and Chelsea's street parking means most stay outside overnight. You do not need to understand how thieves operate to make your car a harder target. These steps help:

  • Keep keys in a signal blocking pouch when they are at home, and test it by trying to open the car with the key inside the pouch.
  • Keep keys away from the front door and front windows, not on a hall table.
  • Switch off keyless entry if your car's settings or the dealer allow it; many models do.
  • Use a visible steering wheel lock. It is old fashioned, and that is the point: it slows a thief down and is easy to spot from the pavement.
  • Ask the dealer about software updates for your model, as some manufacturers have improved keyless security.

Our guide to keyless car theft in Chelsea goes into each of these in more depth.

Premium car keys across SW3, SW1X and SW7

Many of the cars we are asked about sit in residents' bays in Knightsbridge and Belgravia, in mews garages behind Pont Street, or in the underground car parks of the newer riverside blocks. From our base in Chelsea SW3 those are usually 20 to 40 minutes away, and we confirm the time on the call.

A V5C and photo ID are checked before any key is made or any car opened, and that applies to cars owned by companies or leased cars as much as private ones. For the full range of vehicle jobs see our car locksmith page, for home security the main services list, and every fixed price on our price list.

Common questions

Can a locksmith replace a Range Rover key in London?

For many Range Rover and Land Rover models, yes, at the car with no tow. Some of the newest models can only have keys coded by the dealer. Give us the registration and we will tell you which applies to yours before we travel.

Is BMW key replacement cheaper with a locksmith than a BMW dealer?

Usually, when the model allows it. Our spare keys are £50 to £90 and lost key jobs £75 to £140 with no call out fee, done where the car is parked. We confirm from the registration first.

Can you make a new Mercedes key?

For some older Mercedes models we can. Many later Mercedes key systems are controlled so that new keys come through the dealer. We will check your model by registration and be straight with you.

How do I replace a Tesla key card?

If your phone key still works, you can usually add a new card through the car's touchscreen yourself. If every key and phone access is lost, contact Tesla's service. A locksmith does not code Tesla key cards.

Do signal blocking key pouches actually work?

A good one stops the key communicating with the car while it is inside. Test yours: put the key in, walk to the car and try the handle. If the car opens, the pouch is not doing its job.

Do you work on company or leased prestige cars?

Yes, with the lease or hire agreement and photo ID, or written permission and a copy of the V5C from the registered keeper. We will not open the car or make a key without proof.
